Harmony Road School Property Designated as a County Heritage Grove
On June 5, 2013, the McHenry County Historic Preservation Commission approved the property at the Southwest Corner of Route 20 and Harmony Road in Riley Township as the first County Heritage Grove. The small parcel served for many years as a one room schoolhouse and the grove of oak trees have been there for decades prior to the area being settled.
The McHenry County Historic Preservation Commission July 17 unanimously approved recommending Landmark status for the 1931 Harmony School – About one month after the commission voted to Landmark the centuries-old oak grove immediately behind the school. On Oct. 15 the McHenry County Board voted 24-0 to confirm Landmark status for Harmony School. The building now is under consideration by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.
