This page describes a multi-year, county-wide community service program to “restore, remember, or celebrate” 50 endangered historical sites around the county, initiated by the 50th anniversary of the McHenry County Historical Society in 2013.
Titled “Save 50 Sites,” the objective of this community service program is to involve the public, on as many levels as possible, in contributing to identifying, preserving, promoting, and sharing the beliefs and good deeds from our past and from our present that define local heritage, family history, and concern for the environment.
The McHenry County Historical Society’s 50th Anniversary Committee is seeking site nominations from county historical preservation groups and interested citizens. Examples could include everything from preserving vistas and barns to rehabbing cemeteries and churches; from, working with government bodies to craft historical preservation ordinances to photographing and documenting a historic business district or hosting an open house at a historic site.
A volunteer task force, drawn from the Society and other historic preservation groups will review nominations. One idea is make a suggestive list of activities and projects available to local clubs and organizations interested in historical community service projects and promote ways in which a historical site can be “restored, remembered, or celebrated” during May’s Look at Local History Month sponsored by McHenry County’s Joint Council of Historic Groups.
